It’s one of the most common health complaints of the last two decades, and it’s getting worse as screen time increases across every age group.
What it actually feels like
The textbook description lists dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. That’s accurate but incomplete. People experience it differently, and the differences matter.
Some describe:
- A burning, gritty sensation that worsens through the day
- Blurred vision that clears when they look away from the screen, then returns
- Headaches that start behind the eyes and spread across the forehead
- Sensitivity to light, especially fluorescent or blue-toned lighting
- Neck and shoulder tension that builds alongside the eye symptoms
- Difficulty refocusing when switching between screen and distance
- Watery eyes that seem contradictory alongside the dryness
The conventional advice is sensible: adjust your screen brightness, position your monitor at arm’s length, use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Ergonomics matter. So does blinking more often, which sounds obvious until you learn that people blink up to 66 percent less frequently when concentrating on a screen.
These measures help. But for many people they’re not enough, particularly when symptoms have been building for months or years.

Phosphorus — for eyes that tire quickly with a tendency toward floaters or flickering vision. The person is often sensitive, sociable, and affected by their environment. They may be more susceptible to screen fatigue during periods of emotional intensity.
Argentum Nitricum — associated with strain that worsens with anxiety. The person may be apprehensive about deadlines or performance. Eye symptoms can include soreness, redness, and a feeling of swelling. Often comes with a restless, hurried quality.
Euphrasia — where the dominant experience is watering, burning eyes with a feeling of sand or grit. Traditionally associated with inflammatory eye conditions. The discharge tends to be acrid, and symptoms are often worse in bright light.
Belladonna — for sudden, intense eye symptoms: throbbing pain, redness, sensitivity to light and movement. The onset tends to be rapid rather than gradual, and the person may feel hot and flushed with it.
Apis Mellifica — where there’s noticeable puffiness or swelling around the eyes, with stinging pain. The eyelids may feel heavy and swollen. Cold applications tend to bring relief.
The musculoskeletal side
Eye strain doesn’t stop at the eyes. The way people hold themselves at a screen creates its own cascade of problems.
Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, a jaw that clenches without the person noticing. The suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull tighten, and headaches follow. Some people develop pain between the shoulder blades that they attribute to their desk setup but that persists even after they’ve bought an expensive ergonomic chair.
Homeopathic consultations often explore this whole chain. The tension pattern, the posture, the stress response, and the eye symptoms are all part of the same picture. Remedies like Cimicifuga (associated with neck and shoulder tension linked to nervous strain) or Bryonia (where symptoms worsen with any movement and the person wants to stay completely still) may be considered alongside or instead of the eye-specific remedies.
The point is that the body doesn’t compartmentalise, and neither does a thorough consultation.

Blue light sleep disruption
One dimension that’s received increasing attention is the effect of screen use on sleep. Blue light emitted by screens suppresses melatonin production, particularly in the evening. The result is a population that stays wired later, sleeps less deeply, and wakes less rested.
